The Penultimate episode of series 11 arrives tonight with means it's time to take a look at what's to come.
Picture
Picture
Wowza. Series 11 has almost concluded. Tonight is the ninth and penultimate episode of the first season of a brand new era of Doctor who and that is just so stunning. We're eight episodes in, and we've got two episodes left of the season and a new years day special. We're 4 fifths into the series and we've yet to have a really solid, flawless, classic outing. Wowza. Yes, we've had Rosa and Demons of the Punjab and the Witchfinders which have been decent, enjoyable and/or moving. We've also had a few other bearable episodes such as woman who fell to Earth, the ghost monument and Kerblam which although they are bearable, they also have so many flaws and annoying little sections. Then you have Arachnids in the Uk and the Tsuranga Conundrum which were frankly appalling. But there's still no classics. We've just had such a mixed bunch of stories this year that it's hard to compliment it that much. We've still got two episodes and a new Years day special to fix that and stop it from being the worst season of nu-who. It's such a shame if it is, and such a wasted opportunity. So much I don't like about series 11 that I could just say now. But I'd be repeating myself. I'd be saying the same things that I often do every week on these episode previews. So let's focus on the positives. It takes you away is episode 9 of series 11, the penultimate episode of the bunch. And Doctor Who TV have said it's the best one of them all, and that it's a very strong episode. Do I believe them though?
Picture
Now I'm in two minds about that. One part of me believes that is a promising sign, and I should get more excited for the episode that is about to air than usual. Another part of me doesn't want to be disappointed by the story. Over the last few weeks I have disagreed with Doctor Who TV's verdicts of the episodes. They said Demons of the Punjab was bad and I thought it was one of the better episodes of the season. They said Kerblam! was really great and I thought it was just alright. They said the Witchfinders wasn't great and I thought it was quite good. So I'm not going to create a solid verdict on the story until I've watched it tonight as always, because otherwise it's just unfair. I go in every week wanting to like it, wanting to be surprised and I never am really. So let's talk about It takes you away rather than focusing on the series in general. One thing this season has done so well is that every episode has felt quite different from each other in terms of the setting and the tone, usually set apart from each other via the soundtrack. This week the episode is set in a Norwegian fjord, where the Doctor and her friends encounter a blind little girl, Hanne, who requires help from the Doctor. She is scared by creatures who haunt the Fjord, which obviously I cannot tell you about for spoiler reasons and for the fact that I have no idea either. I'm hoping this week the threat can be raised as one of the things that has been weak about this season is the extremely low and frankly pathetic quality of threat. I never thought I'd say this but bring back the Daleks!
Picture
Let's talk about team TARDIS now then. Jodie Whittaker has been getting stronger by the week in the role of the Doctor, and I thought she really nailed what it meant to be the character last week. I'm hoping she continues to give us a great performance in the role, as I think she's so far been doing a really great job, but I do also think she deserves better than Chris Chibnall. If she was from a great era of the show (Like Mccoy and Mcgann) I'm sure she could be a really great and promising incarnation of the Doctor! She's one of the finest things about this season so far! The rest of Team TARDIS have felt so pointless over the last few weeks though, with at least one of them just standing in the background doing nothing for the whole episode. Graham has been the one who's been consistently written and acted through, and I think Bradley Walsh is again one of the finer things about the season so far. There seem to be a lot of promotional pictures revolving around him so I predict that something important will happen to the character during the events of the story. Yaz has been very boring and dull, and I think Mandip Gill deserves better than the role she has been given, and it looks like this week will be another episode when she is mainly subjected to the background doing hardly anything. Ryan is also boring and dull, and I don't think Tosin is an absolutely stellar actor. It's a shame really, but I think there are way too many companions. There should always be two at the most in nu-who. Hopefully they will rectify this and make series 12 feel a little bit less cluttered.
Picture
I'm really hoping this weeks episode is going to be a more memorable outing and hopefully that classic that we have been waiting for for a long time. It won't be, I am pretty sure, but I certainly hope to be pleasantly surprised by this one, and like it as much as Doctor Who TV did. The new season of the show has disappointed me so far, so I'm hoping the last two episodes can at least raise it slightly in my estimations. There's only one more preview left of the season plus the new years one, which is a shame as this is part of the week that I do like, but I must say I am not dreading the moment when Doctor Who concludes this year which is such a shame. A short paragraph here I know, but I've rounded off what I had to say. Thankyou for reading!
5 HINTS AND TEASERS FOR IT TAKES YOU AWAY
  1. This piece of continuity is addressed from Rosa
  2. Another mention of something sonic from episode 1
  3. "Reverse the polarity"
  4. The Wooly Rebellion was going to be an udder bloodbath
  5. One character finds strength from their weakness
