To celebrate William Hartnell month I decided to make a list of every William Hartnell story and put them from worst to best in my opinion, before we move onto our poll results of your thoughts over the next two days.
This list does not include missing episodes and episodes I haven't seen before.
17. The web planet
I hate to say this, but the web planet is terrible. It's got memorable monsters in the zarbi, but this episode does have some quite bad effects and designs, and that's not because this is the 1960's. Sorry, web planet.
16. The space museum
I love the first part of this story as it is so creative and so original, however as the next three parts come along I must say that I was not the biggest fan as it turned into a 'meh' story.
15. The romans
I must say that this episode is quite entertaining, and William Hartnell is at one of his best roles as the first doctor in my opinion. However, it is not a great episode, and doesn't deserve to get to the top 10.
14. The reign of terror
The reign of terror is not a bad story by any means-it just is another story which I would place in the 'meh' story and just below the good category. But it ranks in this place in the list for me.
13. The rescue
The rescue is the first story to feature the brand new companion Vicki, played by Maureen O Brien. It's quite a good two part story, but it's another one I would put in the 'meh' category. Sorry if I keep using that word.
12. The sensorites
The sensorites are a very memorable villain which I am a big fan of. But the episode is not the greatest. It does have a few twist and turns, but it does seem to be a little bit of a boring one.
11. The ark
When watching the first two parts of this, I thought this was not a very good story at all. The story improves with the concluding two parts however, with an exciting battle between monoids and refusians.
10. The keys of Marinus
The keys of marinus is an episode which is layed out quite differently in four or five different stories over the six parts. I like this story for this, and that's why it makes it into our first doctor top 10.
9. The time meddler
The time meddler is a gem with the meddling monk being one of the most memorable villains as he is the first time lord that's not the doctor or Susan. This is one of the rare historicals I like.
8. An unearthly child
The first ever story of doctor who is now in the charts-and I must say, I do love it, or at least most of it. If the other parts were as good as part one, then this would make it to the winning position in the charts.
7. The daleks
The daleks is a brilliant story, however due to the quality of the next six episodes, it places at this point in the charts. It is a great introduction though to a villain which has fought the doctor many times over 53 years
6. The edge of destruction
This is a very unique story which I think is very underrated. It does something brilliant-two whole parts with four characters fighting inside one location. It's a simple plot but a brilliant one too
5. The tenth planet
The first story to feature the cybermen is quite a classic I believe, as it is also the first story to feature a regeneration. It is great to see both of these included-and makes for a classic story.
4. The chase
The daleks are back in their third story, and it's such a shame that the daleks master plan is missing. But we have the chase instead, a mad, fastly paced and a space epic that is higher in my list than most people's.
3. The war machines
The war machines is one of my favourite episodes for the first doctor. Hartnell is great, it's the first episode with two quite good companions Ben and Polly, and of course the farewell to the most memorable companion ever, Dodo.
2. The aztecs
I'm not a big fan of all of the Historical stories to be honest. However, I am a really big fan of the aztecs. This is the best episode for Barbara, and is a strong character piece, with a great tense plot with a brilliant villain.
1. The dalek invasion of Earth
The William Hartnell era is a very mixed era, with a few really great eps, and a few terrible ones. But this episode is a treasure, and one of my favourite episodes from the classic series of the show.
