I was inspired by an article from GQ to write my own list of the best series of Doctor Who in my opinion from best to worst featuring my favourite episodes from each of these seasons. Let's do this!
36. Season 24
Oh dear. Oh deary me. Can we not talk about this season? Season 24 is by far the worst season of doctor who, a dreadful array of stories in which it's best would still be guaranteed as one of the worst. You can sense from the clip above that this season is awful and there are a few clips which represent this. As I said, oh dear. Oh deary me.
Paradise towers is the worst doctor who story of all time, in my opinion, just absolutely dreadful. And as for the others. Moving on....
35. Season 22
There are some great elements featured inside of this series: The return of the Daleks in a unique way, the second doctor and Jamie's return to the show and the new time lord character the Rani. However not all of these concepts were executed well and resulted in a rather cringey array of stories, in particular the story which has come at the bottom of my list.
Timelash is a lesser-achieved effort however it is not as bad as people make it out to be in my opinion. But it's still terrible.
34. Season 23
The Trial of a time lord was a long, serialised run which split up into four stories spread over fourteen parts which all linked back to Colin Baker's Doctor being placed on trial. It's a fantastic idea for a story, and a season indeed, however the 80's production values get it again and is a lesser effort to such previous similar ideas as the Daleks Master Plan and the Key to Time.
Although Mindwarp sees the return of Sil, The Ultimate Foe is by far the strongest story of season 23. This is mainly due to the reveal of the Valeyard's true identity.
33. Series 6
A series which strongly relies on story arcs has a stunning beginning that hardly anyone expected, however flops towards the end. There are many twists and turns, mainly with the true identity of River Song revealed, but ends on a flat note with the dull Wedding of River Song. It's a strong effort but is the weakest series of new who in my opinion.
God there are some awful episodes towards the bottom of that list, however curse of the black spot is by far the worst, and most boring.
32. Season 25
Although Remembrance of the Daleks is an extremely strong opener to the season, the other three stories of the season are not fantastic. The series does get off to a fantastic start however there are two stories which I am not the biggest fan of. Also, Silver Nemesis was a story which I was expecting to be much better than it was.
Hard to choose between greatest show and happiness, as they are both as dreadful as each other. As always, the 80's isms get the better of me.
31. Season 3
It's kind of unfair to rank Hartnell's final full season this low in the chart however this is partly because I have not seen the majority of this season. Although it is a long one, it's also got a large chunk of missing episodes. The Daleks Master Plan and the War Machines are obviously the strongest stories of the season, but there are some other gems, and not so great stories, in there too.
And I'm afraid I cannot rank the other stories as I have not seen any of them due to the missing episodes.
30. Series 2
I know, I know, you're all going to hate me for putting the tenth doctor and Rose's debut season this low in the chart but I'm afraid I'm struggling to place it in a higher position. There are a number of stories which are, to be honest, frankly appalling, mainly the penultimate story of the season, however there are a couple of corkers too.
Fear Her is awful. I know. Love and Monsters and the Idiot's Lantern aren't AWFUL they are just not fantastic. But they are enjoyable enough.
29. Season 17
I think 'meh' is the perfect word to sum up my reaction to the seventeenth season of classic who. Apart from a story which is not only one of the best stories of the Tom Baker era but one of the best stories of all time, the rest of the stories in this season are not too notable. There are a few dreadful moments and episodes but there are some great ones too.
28. Season 18
We're now launching into the 80's era of the show which is by far the worst era in the show's history. Series 18 is one of the stronger seasons of this decade however comparing to some of the highs in the early Tom Baker era, this is not the same. The Baker era doesn't end on a high, but there is an intrestring E-Space trilogy followed by a good conclusion to his era.
Another not really brilliant series of the show, but not as bad as some of the seasons we've already discussed.
27. Season 21
Caves of Androzani is without a doubt the strongest story from Peter Davison's mediocre era of the show. However much I love this conclusion to the story, the rest of the series is quite a disappointment. There are many introductions to new companions, concepts and villains, but the series, as usual with the Davison years, ends on a low note with the twin dilemma.
In a Nutshell: Not the strongest run of doctor who episodes.
26. Series 7
Series 7 is a weird one, and one of the series I found most challenging to place on my list. There are some absolutely wonderful stories on this list (And I'm not counting the Day of the Doctor because that'd be an obvious winner and technically it's not part of this season) but there are also a lot of what we call 'meh' episodes.
Singing doesn't fit in Doctor Who, as we learnt with both the Gunfighters and the rings of Akhaten.
25. Season 20
Season 20 has a few fantastic moments as it celebrates 20 years of the best programme on television by featuring an element in each story which links to the show's history. These include the return of Omega in the opener, the return of the Mara, the Brigadier's return, the Black and White Guardian's reappearance in a trilogy of adventures and the return of the Master, as well as the five doctors.
The King's Deamons is a disappointing finale to what was a rather decent series of the show.
