Peter Capaldi is to leave in the 2017 Christmas special alongside Steven Moffat, with Jo Brand to take over in 2018 with Chris Chibnall's first series, season 10.
There had been rumours that Capaldi would leave to give Chibnall a freedom of choice and would be given a new doctor for his first season, the best way to give him freedom.
Peter Capaldi commented, "It's very sad to leave the show, but I think the time is right, and I think that Jo is the first female doctor, and it is a brilliant choice. There are some great storylines coming up, including Jo Brand's doctor being chased by a giant alien made out of a baby and dog's sick."
Chris Chibnall also revealed, "I loved Peter in the role, but I think it is great to have a female doctor. It's something to really experiment with, something to really start of my era with a high.
