As it was the late Elizabeth Sladen's birthday this week, I thought I'd rank every episode of doctor who that she was in (not including new who cameos and the SJ adventures) and tell you why. Let's see then:
18. The masque of mandragora
For an era in which almost every episode was a classic it's hard to find one which isn't. The masque of mandragora isn't a great episode-but it does have some fun bits to it, and is not bad by any means, just not as good as most.
17. The monster of peladon
I like the monster of Peladon-and trust me, I do think it is a relatively underrated episode. But in terms of this compared to the other Sarah Jane episodes-this ranks 17th in my list.
16. The android invasion
The android invasion is a very intresting one-and one I always find hard to place when I do my lists. But when I am doing this list I have to say that it should rate in the 16th spot.
15. The sontaran experiment
I love the time warrior and I love the invasion of time. Compared to those two, I would say that the sontaran experiment is not a very strong episode, but as an overall episode I would say it is an enjoyable return for the sontarans
14. Planet of evil
Planet of evil is one which when I watched a second time, I loved and adored. But just because this is maybe the strongest era of who, planet of evil is going to be rated at the 14th place.
Robot is possibly one of the most entertaining episodes of doctor who. As the first episode with Tom Baker's doctor, he really steps into the role, and this is a strong point for his era.
12. Death to the daleks
Death to the daleks isn't one of the strongest dalek episodes, but it is still good. There are a number of dalek episodes which I prove to be quite overrated, but this one is not overrated. Or underrated. It's rated perfectly.
11. The revenge of the cybermen
The revenge of the cybermen again is not one of the strongest cybermen episodes, but I do enjoy it. It has a lot of threat involved, some good characters, and the inclusion of the planet Voga and the species Vogans.
10. The time warrior
The first story to feature both Sarah Jane and the sontarans comes to the top 10-as it is such a great introduction to both. This is the start of Sarah Jane's era, my favourite companion of all time.
9. The Hand of fear
I love the hand of fear. This is possibly the best companion exit of all of doctor who-it's such a sweet farewell between the doctor and Sarah. And that's the main reason why it's entered the top 10 Sarah Jane episodes.
8. Terror of the zygons
The zygons are my favourite monsters in doctor who, or at least close to being my favourite. This is a great opener to the monsters-and also a great proper farewell to Harry Sulivan.
7. The pyramids of Mars
The pyramids of Mars is one which I believe is possibly one of the most overrated doctor who stories. Not because it's not good, I absolutely love it, I just think it's higher than it should be. That's why it's not in the top 5 of my chart.
6. Invasion of the dinosaurs
Now here's a story which is underrated. I love this episode. We start with some tacky dinosaur stuff and then we continue with quite a twist in terms of how the plot is layed out. That's why it gets to number 6.
5. Planet of the spiders
At the 5th position in the chart comes the final story to feature the third doctor played by Jon Pertwee. After one of the best periods of the show, it's time for this doctor to regenerate in this brilliant episode
4. The seeds of doom
The seeds of doom is the finale to season 13 of doctor who-one of the best in the show's history. Tom Baker's episodes are at their high as this is one of the strongest pieces of work from the 1970's.
3. Brain of morbuis
The brain of morbuis has quite a horror feel-and it feels very atmospheric. It's one of the best from the Sarah Jane years-and the Tom Baker era as a whole-that is a classic loved by all fans.
2. The ark in space
The ark in space is quite a claustrophobic story, and it does have quite a tacky and rubbish monster. But the monster aside, the ark in space is one of the best episodes from the 1970's.
1. Genesis of the daleks
Genesis of the daleks is almost perfect. It is possibly the best doctor who story of all time, let alone the best story of the classic run. It has so many memorable scenes, daleks, davros and time lords. And of course Tom Baker and Liz Sladen!
